ABOUT INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions given here are guidelines, and not necessarily the only way, or best way for your particular situation.  It's simply how Benjamin handles things.

All instructions given here are "as-is" and if you do not feel capable of running these instructions, then by all means, don't risk it.

triple threat

A basic set of instructions that can help clean up some of the nasty malware stuff that may have worked its way into your computer.  This set of instructions is for the cheapskate in all of us.  If you really want to make things simple, you might check out Trend Micro's products at http://www.antivirus.com

Instructions:

  1. Print this instruction set.  Trust me... you want everything shut down while you do this!

  2. Start / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, and remove anything that's called a toolbar... AdSolutions, 180, Yahoo, Google, etc...

  3. Go to www.filehippo.com and you'll be downloading a few different programs to clean off your computer... Save these all to your desktop.

    1. CCleaner
    2. Malware Bytes
    3. AVG Anti-spyware

  4. Install and run CCleaner first... it's a mostly intuitive program, and what I'm looking for you to do is to run the analyze and clean of the files. This will mostly clear out junk that you don't need, but it cleans a few areas of temporary files that could "reinfect" you.

  5. Reboot.

  6. Install and run Malware Bytes.  It is an intensive program that provides a scan and removal of many of the bad programs.  During the installation it will prompt you to update, and by all means, please do.

  7. Run the scan, and it'll take you about an hour, or sometimes even longer.  When the scan completes, you'll have a chance to clean all of the items... Clean up everything that it finds.

  8. Reboot.

  9. Install and run AVG Anti-Spyware.  Again, it'll prompt you to update, and we want you to definitely get the latest and greatest updates.

  10. Set it to run the scan on your entire computer, and then go fix a sandwich, mow the lawn, read a book, etc...  it'll take another hour.  Clean everything it finds.

  11. Reboot, and run another Spybot Search and Destroy scan, as well as another AVG scan... If things are cleaned up here, then continue no further.  You've just completed the "triple threat" and you're done.

  12. NOW, having said that, the instructions so far should handle 95% of the situations you'll face, but sometimes you have to rely on the heavy duty stuff.

  13. Check out http://housecall.trendmicro.com and run a scan there, if you're still having problems.

  14. Go back to www.FileHippo.com and look for a software called Ad-Aware (by a company called Lavasoft), and download it.  You will run the instruction set once again, but this time, include the installation and running of Ad-Aware after running Spybot Search & Destroy.
