For the show broadcast between February 2nd and February 8th, 2008
The new toll-free number was announced on the show. 888-NERD-888, easier dialed as 888-637-3888, is the show's OFFICIAL phone number now. Easy to remember, easy to dial, and allows the studio staff to make fun of Benjamin like you wouldn't believe.
Benjamin defended the usage of the term "nerd", as discussions covered the different meanings behind "geek", "dweeb", "dork", and also "twit".
Children's usage of the internet and digital devices, with notes that 45% of the time dedicated to playing games, and 31% dedicated to listening to music. TV shows, and the rest fell into the last little bits.
A gizmo that scans your DVD's was mentioned, but after looking at the specs, Benjamin decided that the Groqit really wasn't worth the $100, as you'd have to purchase a lot of the wrong DVD's before it paid for itself.
One user had a severe problem with the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification popping up and noting that he didn't have a legitimate version of Windows. Benjamin explained that the best thing to do was to get a legit copy from the local computer dealer very quickly. Benjamin also noted that even though the problem was merely annoying, that updates from Microsoft... the major security patches, and so forth... were not being downloaded and installed.
The "triple threat" was covered for a couple of different listeners. One of them was having a problem with Spybot Search & Destroy, because they left the "Tea Timer" and "SD Helper" on during the installation.
Another user had questions about where to get the files for the "triple threat" as well as other software to eliminate malware. We referred her to http://www.FileHippo.com, even if Benjamin's sidekick didn't get it quite right the first time!
Sierra Club is trying to encourage parents to send their kids outdoors, through a tax on video games, TV's and the like. Discussion revolved around the idea of just simply just letting the kids take the video games outdoors.
Greenpeace had their own ideas on computing, noting that the Apple MacBook Air was the greenest laptop yet, being mercury free, and arsenic free.
Benjamin discussed proxy servers, specifically mentioning www.proxy.org with the idea that sometimes there are legitimate reasons for using a proxy. Benjamin did note that many schools, corporations, and the like, frown on the usage of proxy servers to get around internal firewalls. Still, a proxy server can help to maintain ones personal privacy at the same time.
And for a little bonus... Benjamin found this nerd test on-line. See what your score is by clicking below! (Benjamin noted "the points were lost most likely due to my early bedtime")
