Show notes

For the show broadcast between February 23rd and February 29th, 2008

Tim Keeler was back in studio, as "The Voice" was conspicuously absent.  Rumors of a "Tofu Incident" were bandied about, but we don't believe anything serious was wrong!

Microsoft is surveying students on what has been dubbed peer-to-peer morality.  Kids who knew the rules, appeared to follow them.  Those that didn't understand that sharing was theft, appeared to share more.  Microsoft wants to write school curriculum and teach the kids instead of you.  Benjamin expressed his disdain for the imposition of morality from a company that beats up smaller companies, and also doesn't admit dangerous flaws in their software.

Vista still isn't taking off, as evidenced by the number of companies out there offering to rollback your computer from Vista... to XP.  Since the Vista license includes authorization to rollback, it's not a bad idea.

Vista Service Pack 1 is available on file sharing sites, and while people are clamoring for it, Benjamin advised to stay away.  Viruses and trojans frequently come this way, and besides, Microsoft is rather testy about people breaking rules.

Speaking of rules, obey your restraining order.  A 16 year old found out that a MySpace friend request was just as bad as going within 100 yards, and got slapped down with a contempt of court judgment.  If you're a stalker... you just better give up now!

eBay sellers, watch out too!  The IRS is stalking you... out for money from your profits.  If you sell more than $5000, or 100 items... they think you're a pro, and should be giving them a cut.  Of course, the problem with sales goes everywhere, with Best Buy, and their ridiculous warranty about delivering your goods purchased on-line, to you within a minute of walking in the store.  With all of the exceptions and caveats... well, you might as well be dealing with the IRS.

A former user of the Zune is now deaf, as his Zune reset while he was putting his headphones on.  His eardrums were blasted out and he can't hear much any more.  That brought up the suggestion from Benjamin that one should turn on the volume FIRST, then bring the headphones up.  If people can hear your music from 10 yards away, you really have it too loud.

Alex called and asked about keeping her computer safe at college.  The usual suggestions of anti-virus and not getting involved in illegal acts at college were given.  Additionally, Benjamin recommended software available at www.lojackforlaptops.com in case of theft.  It was the show about bad guys, it seemed, as a few other people called in about viruses, spyware, and hackers.

Jake asked about the vest video card for gaming, and was told to get the one that his game called for.  Tom ran into problems with his USB hard drive, which appeared to be issues with power.  Helen asked about a battery message, and Benjamin noted it was the CMOS batter dying.
