Show notes

For the show broadcast between March 1st and March 7th, 2008

Benjamin welcomed "The Voice" back onto the air, who immediately played down any possibility of a "Tofu Incident".

Technology addiction is plaguing people a lot more these days.  Benjamin had a survey that reflected that 1/3rd of the people in the modern world have checked their e-mail in the middle of the night.  In an informal survey in the studio, 1/2 of the people had checked their e-mail in the middle of the night.  Discussions of the Blackberry (aka Crackberry) were given, and the discussions covered the kinds of problems one might experience if addicted.

Microsoft's Vista Service Pack 1 is near to coming out, but it doesn't add new improvements.  A number of issues are coming up, including a reported problem with Trend Micro Antivirus.  Benjamin railed against the concept of a Service Pack breaking so many things.  Additionally, many people will need to install a patch PRIOR to installing the Service Pack.  Ugh, what next?

Benjamin covered the details for selecting and purchasing your next inkjet printer.  Suggesting the top names being Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Epson, he still noted that sometimes others will look better under different circumstances.  Grab your SD card from your camera, place a few of your best looking pictures on the card, and take it down to the store with CHEAP paper.  Get help from the salesperson to print your test on multiple printers using the cheap paper.  One printer will come through looking really good for you.

Some student is apparently arguing with the FDA over the possibility of pacemaker problems.  Benjamin immediately dismissed the concept of an MP3 player (like the iPod) being able to disrupt or destroy pacemakers.  Of course, the microwave, a massive transmitter, or some other MASSIVE electronic unit might kill the little old lady.

Benjamin ran through the details of the lifetime of an LCD monitor (5-10 years), and also explained some basics of how they worked.  When the color starts to dim, then it's time to start looking for a new one.

Henry asked about converting CD's to WAV or MP3, and Benjamin suggested FreeRip available at www.freerip.com .  Henry also asked about converting files from Geoworks (an ---OLD--- DOS based program) to Microsoft Word.

A caller named Ben asked about problems with his speakers, which led towards diagnosis of a defective sound card.  Arthur asked about the differences between Vista as far as 32 bit and 64 bit.  Jack asked about DOS versions, and Benjamin explained a few things.

There was also some discussion about OpenOffice (available at www.openoffice.org ).
