Show notes

For the show broadcast between March 15th and March 21st, 2008

Some of the most bizarre things come to our attention, and if you'd like to tell us about more of them, send us info on our contacts page.  In this case, we covered the fact that a Kentucky man was arrested for drunk driving, and as part of his defense, he requested that the Breathalyzer code be disclosed.  Wow, neat trick from someone stupid enough to drive drunk!

Benjamin received an e-mail from Amtrak that looked like a phishing expedition, but really wasn't.  Key rules for them... learn how the "phishers" do it, and don't copy them.  Benjamin noted the simple things for you to protect yourself, no matter what...

  • Don't click links in e-mails!

  • Go to the website by the web address that you normally use, and navigate to where you need to be.

  • If in doubt about any e-mail, contact the customer support from your own records (not the e-mail), and ask for them to assist.

  • Don't believe a word of any e-mail!

Speaking of e-mail, Benjamin and Nick both noted that you need to think twice before copying someone on an e-mail, forwarding e-mail, etc.  "Blackberry Blackouts" are also being done around the country and elsewhere to encourage workers to get away from the computer.  Kill the obsession now, before you really need help!!!

Val called with a virus problem, probably something we call WinAntiSpyware.  We referred him to the triple threat, but also mentioned that he needs to update his anti-virus.  Mateo had a problem with a dead motherboard, and how to handle that... replace it with no problem, HOWEVER, after adding memory, and a CPU, it might be better to get a new PC.  Rene was having problems with her iPod, and suspected a virus, but they are few and far between.

Dale asked about how to check the speed of his cable modem, and Benjamin referred him to Speedtest.Net.  Benjamin also explained why some servers might run very slow, and others might be blazing fast!

Paul called in regards to the Blue Screen of Death when he was dealing with a particular piece of hardware.  Benjamin suggested he get updated drivers from the manufacturer.  Paul also asked about JDE and the AS/400... ancient computing technology that big companies still use.  He asked about training, but it's hard to find.

Barry asked how to add a password to an Excel spreadsheet, and Daryl asked about making a PowerPoint presentation smaller, and Benjamin advised how to do both items.  The links above lead to the Microsoft explanations.  Piper wanted to know how to send large files via e-mail, and Benjamin suggested Pando, and a couple of other programs.

Charlie asked why the computer kept doing a disk check every bootup, but found nothing wrong.  Benjamin advised that getting rid of this problem was done by going to a DOS prompt and typing in chkntfs /d.  After that, it should be fine!
