For the show broadcast between March 29th and April 4th, 2008
So many issues, so many calls, and it's hard to know exactly where to start! Probably one of the most important things we covered in this show was a website that allows you to see where the bad guys are in your neighborhood. Family Watchdog will allow you to enter in an address (usually your own), and find the various sexual predators in the neighborhood. These are the folks you want your kids to stay FAR away from.
Nick brought up some interesting topics about updating his accounting software on the internet, instead of dial-up, as well as keeping kids safe on the Internet. Benjamin praised a software package from BsafeOnline for keeping your kids safe, and recommends it highly!
Snakes in a computer (no relation to the Samuel L. Jackson flick "Snakes on a Plane") managed to gross out a few of the folks in the studio, and that led us to covering how to clean out your computer. Canned air is a WONDERFUL invention...
Belle called in and asked about pop-ups, and Benjamin brought up the triple-threat again. Check it out now, so you know what to watch for!
Kim was concerned about viruses via LimeWire, and Benjamin noted how to keep safe (with an antivirus like Trend Micro), but also noted that there are legitimate uses for LimeWire, even if it does have it's "dark side". Darius also asked about music, but finding legitimate music to use on his school radio station. Nick saved the day by mentioning that Royalty Free music is the best route to go, but that the students could also come up with their own music. A "Battle of the Bands" kind of situation to get airplay... both sides win! Better this, than to get in trouble for playing copyrighted songs on air.
Balthazar (Bal) brought up the discussion of better search engines than Google. Google, of course, is one of the top dogs out there, but there are others. Yahoo gives you more news, and a different set of search criteria. Dogpile gives you the results from a numerous websites, and Altavista is still around. Speaking of Altavista, Benjamin uses the Babelfish to translate documents on a regular basis. Jacob talked about laptop batteries (time to buy a new one), and Henry talked about his old 286-20.
And that's not all...
Also mentioned was the fact that our television world is changing due to computers. The premiere of "The Office" was seen by 9.7 million people on TV... but it was also seen by 2.7 million more people, on their computer screens. Soon, I imagine that we'll be watching more TV on our extra monitor, than we're using the cool 60" plasma in the living room.
PS, if you have a 60" plasma screen just laying around, not in usage, Ben and Nick are both looking for donations! (grin!)
