For the show broadcast between April 12th and April 18th, 2008
So many things to talk about, and so little time... but we packed most of it in! Tata, an Indian company, is outsourcing... to the United States! Woohoo! About time! We didn't mention it, but these guys might be the same ones making one of the least expensive cars in the world! Perhaps this will be a new trend? Oh I sure hope so... talking to someone on the other side of the world is not always the easiest when you're frustrated with your computer!
Benjamin and Nick also discussed the terms of service from various companies, and how you never get to agree or disagree... until you've already accepted the terms of the agreement. Benjamin didn't have a chance to cover the agreement notice that said that by opening the disk envelope, you agreed to the terms inside of the envelope on the disk. Crazy small print... eh?
YouTube is seeing gang material on their servers. Recruitment in the gangs is hitting a new high/low, and just like many tools, technology will be used. And speaking of "suspects" and illegal items, the FBI is luring suspects using fake child porn links as well. Benjamin noted that saving your important items on-line might not be the best, given the gangs, and other suspects around the Internet!
Parker asked about spam, and who to forward the spam to. The address spam@uce.gov will handle the information, however we don't know how much good that will do. Herman thinks that his neighbor is stealing WiFi, and Benjamin suggested using WPA2 on the wireless router. If WPA2 is not available, Herman needs to check the manufacturer of his wireless router for the latest firmware (software in the machine) upgrade. Johnny asked about printing stuff on the Internet, and the edges of the page getting cut off, and Benjamin noted that it was a failing of older versions of Internet Explorer... get the latest software!!!
Ace asked about what to do with his old computer now that he has a new one. Benjamin had suggestions all over the place, including donating to needy charity like an orphanage like Benjamin does, or a school or church. Dell also has a great recycling program for anyone purchasing a new computer, or who has an old Dell computer. Bart asked about 3 in 1 printers (scanner, copier, printer), and Stacey asked about Linksys routers, and if they were the same as firewalls.
Tom had issues with 2 hard drives, one with a missing operating system, and we found out some of the background of one of our listeners. (NOTE!!! Tom's flying right these days, and is a great guy! We had a blast with him!). Ted also wanted to know how to keep the look and feel of his Windows installation when he went over to a new computer, and Benjamin covered the great tool at START / PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS / Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Offline, Benjamin and Ted chatted for a minute about the old Timex Sinclair too... talk about "back in the day!"
