Show notes

For the show broadcast between May 17th and May 23rd, 2008

So many topics are brought up these days, and Benjamin brought up an interesting one about DefCon.  A discussion of "White Hat", "Black Hat", and "Gray Hat" hackers ensued, as well as the interesting "Race to Zero" which is to tackle the major antivirus programs head-on... AND WIN!  The link to the convention website is at the bottom of the page.  <READ THE WARNING>

Benjamin and Nick covered many other topics, from Yahoo banners serving up viruses, and Chinese hackers that might try to threaten the Olympics in August (if they aren't already at Defcon!)

Nick brought up the proper disposal of e-waste, the electronics that we have purchased, and have become obsolete over the course of recent years.  Benjamin took the opportunity to mention physical destruction of hard drives, and some videos he had seen on YouTube.  Remember kiddies, don't try this at home!  For your viewing pleasure, Thermite, Firecracker, Train, .223 Rifle, M44 Moison Nagant rifle (7.62x54), and a Shotgun at close range.  Sure beats "format c: /s", doesn't it?  A reminder that one should clean up all of the bits and pieces, and monitors are hazardous to the environment, and should not be disposed of this way.

We talked to Tom, who was having problems with his older computer, and Webshots was probably slowing it down.  We also covered some other tricks, like adding memory from www.crucial.com and how to find out what he has.  We got e-mails from Bob, who wanted to know how to eliminate his password in Windows XP Home, and Mac, who wrote in a question about hooking up a USB drive to his digital picture frame.

Mathias had a hard drive and about 100GB of music, and was concerned it was slowing down his computer.  When Benjamin found out that he had a 120GB hard drive, the verdict was clearly in.  Liz asked about iTunes, and if they might be slowing down her computer as well, with a different answer from Benjamin.  Douglas asked about the wireless router at work, and Benjamin and Nick made fun of the nerds at the office.  Paul asked for a fortune telling of the coming items from Windows 7 and the next version of Office... and Benjamin answered with...  oooh, you have to listen to find out!

...and the audio is right here!
