For the show broadcast between September 13th and September 19th, 2008
Benjamin opened the show this week with his own description of the show, that this is a show for everyone, from people with a large wealth of technical know-how to people who can’t figure out how to reboot their computer. If you would like to reach him please send an e-mail from the website or call 888-NERD-888 (888-637-3888).
This week on Computer Talk Radio Benjamin covered a wide variety of topics including… orphanages. He went down to Mexico and did an on-site interview with D.J. at Door of Faith Orphanage in Mexico. They discussed the fact that they need computers down in the orphanages just as much as we do. In fact, the computers that they have are just as up to date as well; they are running Windows XP or newer. Some of the teenagers even have laptops. If you would like to donate anything, go to www.dofo.org.
Benjamin also talked about the world of digital job hunting. Searching for jobs online has been around for awhile, but now it is getting even bigger to due sites like www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com, and many more. In fact, online job hunting is currently surpassing other means of finding jobs, such as through newspapers. Benjamin suggests using sites like Facebook and Plaxo to keep in touch with people who may one day be able to get you a job, but b careful with your e-mails. It’s very easy to forget that you’re e-mailing a potential employer and not an everyday friend, so don’t get too casual. Additionally, e-mails are great, but phone calls are always more personal and sincere.
Additionally, Benjamin also talked about an online purchase that you may not have thought about: eyeglasses. Glasses are much cheaper online; he bought five pairs, two of which were specialized, for $100 TOTAL. Sites like www.zennioptical.com are great places to get deals like this.
Another thing that Benjamin covered is improving your website. This can be accomplished in many ways. One great thing to do is to make sure that there are enough graphics to catch people’s eyes but now so much that load times for the site sky rocket. Additionally, find a Search Engine Optimization company to help you get better ranking from Google and other search engines, putting you towards the top of the list, which is where people usually stay.
In addition, Benjamin talked about internet caps. Many companies are thinking about limiting how much you can download per month. After you hit and pass this mark, they will begin charging you extra. This idea doesn’t seem too bad since it SHOULD reduce internet congestion. Unfortunately, the cap could be set very low, such as 5 gigabytes per month, which many people would hit in as little as a week. Fortunately, many companies are thinking about different plans with different amounts of download permission, with more standard downloading permission costing more money. The internet download cap may work very well, but it may prove quite problematic. Only time will tell.
Benjamin also answered e-mails on the air, such as Lauren’s question about a new laptop. He also gave Bob information on Panda Antivirus.
