For the show broadcast between November 15th and 21st, 2008
This week on Computer Talk Radio, Benjamin talked about the fact that your Co-Worker may be a thief. 97% of data breaches are due to employee carelessness or theft by employees and care-workers. Employees, contractors, etc frequently go surfing on the local network instead of the internet or go snooping through their co-workers’ information. Sometimes people accidentally access information, but are still fired or even prosecuted for these actions, even if they are accidental. In order to avoid this happening, do not write down passwords, be careful what you download, and make sure you don’t throw anything important or personal in the trash.
Benjamin also had an interview with DJ from Door of Faith Orphanage, a place where you might donate your computer items, some money, or if you are somewhat local, some time. http://www.dofo.org is an Orphanage that is about 45 minutes south of the Mexico border, that has over 100 children that could use a little help.
Additionally, Benjamin talked about up and coming trends in personal computing. Many people are keeping their eyes on Netbooks, which are essentially very small notebooks, which are greatly portable, but unfortunately are underpowered and run on old or unfamiliar operating systems. The great upside here is that they only weigh 2-3 pounds and are very small, though people with big fingers and particularly fast typists may not like this however, because the keys are so small. They also do not have CD drives. This is a great concept which may work very well eventually because of their small size, but many things would likely have to change before they become a viable option for everyone.
In more terms of the future, AT&T is now limiting broadband traffic for its customers. Different subscribers will have different limits for downloads. 3 Megabit users will be limited to 60 GB and 10 megabit users will be limited to 150 GB. For the moment this only applies to new users, but current users who pass the 150 GB mark will be put into the program as well. In this program, if you go over your limit, you are charged an additional dollar for each gigabyte over your limit. Comcast and other providers are also looking into doing the same thing, though Verizon has stated that it has no plans to limit internet use.
Online Scams are spreading in more and more ways these days, including posing as antivirus programs. Antivirus 200 8 and Antivirus 2009 are two different programs which you pay for and download to detect and remove viruses. The problem is that the programs don’t detect or remove viruses. To avoid scams like this, never allow a download which you did not specifically request. Additionally, distrust everything and only deal with companies you already deal with.
In regards to legitimate downloads, Benjamin talked about patches for hardware and software. These patches frequently give you new luxuries and added functionality, which is always great, but not the primary reason to get patches. The first and foremost reason for these patches is that products rarely have perfect safety, especially since hackers are constantly changing their methods, meaning that safety products go out of date quickly. These patches give you the latest antivirus and anti-hacker tools, which will keep your computer safe. For the latest patches for your computer, visit websites of producers or your hardware and software, where the patches should be available.
Benjamin also talked about unfortunately high numbers of downloads and searches for objectionable material, which has $3000 being spent on it every second, just on the internet. The top countries are China, South Korea, Japan, and the US. This is a huge problem, which is only growing as the internet grows.
In the e-mail segment, Benjamin answered Nicoles question about using to External Hard Drives on a computer, Steve’s question about setting up a private network, and Jeffery’s question about his wireless keyboard and mouse that aren’t working.
