Show notes

For the show broadcast between January 31st and February 6th, 2009

Macintosh is always coming out with strange apps for the iPhone, and Benjamin brought us news of another one today, though if he had and iPhone, he most likely would already have this app. The BulletFlight app lets you put in environmental data and it will give you information how to pull off the shot. It comes standard with only three rifles programmed in, but you can of course add more. Hmm… interesting…

As mentioned a few weeks ago, Benjamin headed to CES this year, and while he was there saw a lot of great products. One of the was the OQO, which made an appearance on the show “Lie to Me” when one of the characters whipped it out to run a voice stress analyzer, which, interestingly enough, he did in the program Gold wave, which Benjamin uses at church for recording and numerous other purposes, such as some of the things here on the show.

In more news, Benjamin talked about the banning of a Wikipedia page in London by the Internet Watch Foundation. The Foundation, which produces a blacklist of sites not appropriate, posted the page after receiving multiple complaints of an inappropriate image of a child on the page. This of course threw Wikipedia into a rampage, saying that the foundation was “disenfranchising” thousands of Wikipedia users for one image, instead of just blocking the image, though the Foundation wants to keep lists simple so that ISPs don’t have to worry about fine observation, just individual pages. Pages on the list are not illegal to visit or automatically blocked, though ISPs have the option to block them. This is a good thing, but we do have to be careful to make sure it doesn’t reach into silencing things that aren’t bad, as they may eventually.

Hopefully everyone knows that Circuit City is going out of business by now and that there are supposedly sales going on. Unfortunately, Best Buy, frequently across the street of at least nearby, still has better prices on many of the items at Circuit City, who is supposedly going out of business and therefore holding massive liquidation sales. Interesting, isn’t it? This just serves as a reminder to always look around and compare prices on sales, because the prices may often be higher than they were.

This week Benjamin spoke with Jim from Quicken Online, who gave him information on the new product. Quicken Online is the first free, web-based personal finance service to give consumers a forward-looking view over their next few paychecks. This is an interesting little program, and definitely something to put some time into checking out given how quickly tax season is approaching…

Facebook seems to be making a lot of news recently, and it turns out that it is now the method for a new form of identity theft, where someone hacks into your Facebook account, locks you out, and pleads to your friends for help with a sob story about getting mugged in London or Brussels or Paris or wherever. They then ask for cash for the trip home and get rich in the process. Make sure that you keep your passwords to everything secure, and never send someone money based only on an e-mail, which is easy to fake. Call the person!!

Speaking of imposters, Microsoft removed an imposter Antivirus from thousands of computers last month in just a few days. Microsoft releases patches on the second Tuesday of every month with protection from the latest viruses. Make sure to get these quickly, because hackers get a hold of the information in them and then use that info to victimize people who don’t have the patches.

This week Miriam E-mailed in wondering where to get Microsoft office, and Benjamin told her to head to www.openoffice.org. Frank also wrote in, wanting to know the best procedure for donating a computer. Additionally, Bob wrote in asking how to connect his two desktops.
