For the show broadcast between January 16th and January 22nd, 2010
This week, Benjamin decided to do a self-introduction to the audience as part of his return from CES last week. Going through differences between geeks and nerds, Benjamin gave us some info about his background and especially his goals for the show for this year. Benjamin is here for the listeners, and as always, if you ever have a computer question, please let us know at 888-NERD-888 (888-637-3888) or in the contacts tab at the top of the page.
Of course, Benjamin also gave out some security tips. One of these tips is to keep your computer updated. For instance, as you hopefully know, Microsoft regularly releases patches, and for good reason. These patches “patch” holes in your computer where malware can get through, and help keep you safe. Get the updates at http://www.update.microsoft.com/.
Continuing along the same vein, Benjamin also reminded people to have back-ups of their data. Also, never follow links inside of e-mails, unless you’re ABSOLUTLEY certain that it comes from where it says it does. Also, keep a firewall running along your network, and using strong passwords.
Additionally, Benjamin read a few scam emails to avoid. These typically contain patterns like asking for money or personal information. Sometimes they even pose as your bank. Never, EVER reply to these emails. Delete them immediately. If you do get an email claiming to be from your bank, go to their website or them directly and verify it.
On another note, Benjamin also talked about 3D TV’s. He saw a lot of those at CES, so he felt like talking about them. While they can be really cool, they also have their downsides. Much of the population cannot see them, and even more get headaches when watching 3D movies. Until the technology improves, Benjamin doesn’t see it going anywhere major.
Later, Benjamin talked about internet addiction. This is a serious threat, and it happens to a lot of people. With news, e-mail, movie trailers, etc, the internet has a lot to offer. Still, this is not a place to find your rest. Go out with friends and family, have fun!
When Benny came on this week, he and his dad talked about the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), which gives out ratings for games. These ratings give suggestions for who should play them, and also have descriptors saying why a game was given a certain rating. This is an important system to know.
Additionally, Benjamin and Benny talked about the recent earthquake in Haiti, and how technology is uniting the world more than ever. After the quake, people were already sending out tweets, pictures, and status updates within minutes.
