Show notes

For the show broadcast between January 23rd and January 29th, 2010

This week in Benny’s segment, Benjamin and his son discussed 2010, now that sales records have come out. To nobody’s surprise, the best selling console game of 2009 was, of course, Modern Warfare 2. However, the rest of the chart was filled with Nintendo games. The best selling console was also Nintendo’s, the Wii. For more information, check out the audio below!

Additionally, it seems that Warner Brothers has acquired a new Video Game property. Sesame Street, which has been a famous children’s television show for 40 years, hasn’t had a video game since the 90s, but is making its return under Warner Brothers.

In terms of contacts, Scott wrote in asking for a comparison of computers and Marina asked about firewalls and Anti-virus.

Occasionally, Benjamin also discusses health issues, and this week he talked about cyberchondria. Similar to hypochondria, this is where people catch something like a common cold, and instantly Google it, then panic thinking that they have some rare disease only found in African Baboons.. Though we may joke about it here, this is a serious matter. See your doctor for things like this, don’t diagnose yourself.

In the news, the US courts have split on an internet ban placed over a child sex offender. Though many courts push for banning their internet, others are against it. Currently, the popular consensus is to not use the law to ban them, but instead to encourage internet providers to adopt a “three-strike” policy, but how it would play out is unknown. Naturally, this is something to keep an eye on.

On a scary note, Benjamin brought us news that there is a low-cost service out there (revealed by a security researcher) who uses a 400 computer cluster with a 135 million word dictionary to crack passwords in minutes. This is just another point to hammer home the need for strong passwords. Use symbols, upper and lower case letters, etc.

Of course, there’s always moments of stupidity in life, and one criminal, Craig Lynch, belongs at the top of the list of dumb criminals. After escaping from a minimum-security prison, he posted status updates and pictures of his exploits on the run from the cops. I’m no legal expert, but that seems pretty stupid. Unsurprisingly, he was once again apprehended.

On another note, Benjamin brought us info on how to hook up multiple monitors, and talked about doublemyspeed.com.

Additionally, he spoke with Jerry Egan from Symantec about Haiti-related scams. Of course, there are a lot of them looking for money to “support victims” but really go into private wallets. Don’t fall for this!
