Show notes

For the show broadcast between February 27th and March 2nd, 2010

This week, in Tips and Tricks, Benjamin brought us information on improving websites. For instance, you must know who’s going to view your site, and gear it towards that audience. Different people have different tastes. Its also a good idea to find a search engine optimization company. These will help you get better results with search engines. For more information, check out the audio below!

In Benny’s segment, our father-son duo discussed the army and their training. If you walk into just about any military command center, you’ll see walls lined with computers running simulators and intense video games for training soldiers. With the price of computers, you would think they would get consoles, which are cheaper and have better game processing capabilities. Why don’t they? They tried, and Microsoft refused, fearing an X-Box shortage and other issues.

On a scary note, it seems that some schools are spying on their students, not just at school, but at home. One Pennsylvania school district issues laptops to their students with a software like Lojack for Laptops and uses it to scan for inappropriate material. However, Lojack for Laptops didn’t give them this software, and wherever they got it, the schools are abusing it, which is very concerning.

Benjamin also talked about people resisting Broadband. 35% of American adults do not currently have high speed internet, though it has been available for years. There are a lot of factors in this, from affordability, to lack of computing skills, to relevance. Obviously, a pig farmer doesn’t really need high speed internet that much, while a businessman does. For more info, check out the audio below.

Additionally, Benjamin spoke with Ashley from CTO, which created the Fast Pencil, a service for helping to write and promote independent books and novels, a great and exciting product for everyone.

This week, Chuck asked about DSL and if Cable internet was faster, and Jack asked about defrags and if they’re really necessary. Eugene also called in, and asked about Macs vs Pcs and Symantec vs McAfee.

Being all about security, Benjamin also gave us lots of information about different security tools that everyone should have. One of them, Malware Bytes, is a free download for scanning computers and removing viruses. There’s also LastPass, which saves all of your passwords into one area like IE and Firefox do, but encrypts them. Then, you only have to remember your “last password” that you’ll ever use. Again.
